Maclean, McVeagh, McVeigh

TYPOGRAPHIC BOOK PROJECT - AWARDED PASS BY ISTD

This book is essentially a personal investigation into my family and distant ancestors. With a rough knowledge of my surnames’ origin in Scotland as a clan, a combination of online archives and my nan’s incredible memory helped me to disover the McVeigh timeline. The book spans over 8 centuries starting in the West of Scotland and showcasing the journeys to rural Ireland and New York City in the early 20th Century. It contains factual information, narrative from my nan and old photographs and archives.

Initial research.

It all begins with a name.

Spanning over 8 centuries and changing names three times, I discovered my ancestors originated in the Isle of Mull, Scotland as Clan Maclean. Battles and marriages led to expansion and migration. Following their journeys through census’, passenger lists & documents, I discovered the family migrated to Monaghan,Ireland in 18th Century and then ventured to America and England by sea in the 20th Century.

Initial development.

A journey showcased through typography.

As this was an ISTD project, typographic specification and extensive rationale were needed for every design choice. Due to the nature of the project, I produced a lot of initial development and ideas to showcase the journeys. Important details included key dates and times of migration, the co-ordinates of destinations and my nan’s narrative. Documents such as passengers lists inspired layout and small details used on the pages.
